Ginkgo is native to China and is considered a living fossil, being the sole surviving member of an ancient group of trees that dates back over 270 million years. It naturally grows in mountainous regions of eastern China but has been widely cultivated throughout temperate regions worldwide. The tree thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates urban pollution, and can withstand extreme weather conditions. Commercial cultivation for leaf harvest occurs primarily in China, France, Germany, and the United States.

Traditional & Cultural Use:
Ginkgo has been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,000 years, where the leaves are known as “yin xing ye.” Chinese herbalists have traditionally used ginkgo leaves in various botanical preparations. The tree is considered sacred in Buddhist and Confucian traditions, often planted near temples. Ginkgo leaf extracts became popular in European herbal medicine in the mid-20th century and have been widely available in UK and EU markets since the 1980s as standardized herbal preparations.

Preparation & Application:
Ginkgo leaves are typically prepared as a tea by steeping 1-2 teaspoons of dried chopped leaves in hot water for 5-10 minutes, then straining. Fresh leaves should be avoided due to potential irritant compounds that are reduced through proper drying and processing.
